The West Somerset Railway announced that Jonathan died following a short period of ill health. As chairman of West Somerset Railway PLC since 2018, he guided the organisation through significant financial and compliance difficulties, the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit, and wider economic pressures affecting tourism.
His connection to the railway began in childhood, when he regularly visited the West Somerset Railway. As a teenager, he became a volunteer, turning an early passion into a lasting commitment. In 2014, he joined the locomotive department and became a regular member of the footplate crew, balancing practical railway work with his leadership responsibilities.
Colleagues remembered Jonathan as a hardworking engineman and a larger-than-life character whose enthusiasm for transport was matched by his generosity towards others. He actively encouraged colleagues and volunteers to develop their skills, gain confidence, and progress in their roles.
His influence extended beyond management, helping strengthen the community built around shared interests, friendship, and railway preservation.
Following his death, Vice Chairman Robin Wichard is to serve as acting chairman, providing continuity as the organisation looks towards 2027.
Jonathan’s passing leaves a significant void among colleagues, volunteers, and railway enthusiasts. His dedication to preserving railway heritage and supporting others will remain an enduring part of his legacy.
May Jonathan Jones-Pratt rest in peace. His passion, leadership, and friendship will be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
